Turning Market Timing into Meaningful Acquisitions

This year has emerged as a true "buyer's market," and the timing couldn't be better for collectors. In the most basic sense, it's a simple case of supply and demand: the pandemic saw a surge in the number of artists and galleries, but the past few years have seen buyers shrink as speculators have left the market. While this creates an exciting opportunity, it still leaves an important question: how do you sift through the overwhelming amount of art available to find the work that is right for you?

At Cochran Arts, we work with clients to help them think strategically about building collections that reflect their own interests and tastes. Are you drawn to explore a specific medium, like photography? Are you looking for works that reflect your personal passions, such as the environment? Would you prefer to support local artists or collect internationally? What investment level feels comfortable for your pocket book? These thoughtful parameters help us concentrate our search as we look to find exceptional pieces with strong provenance and excellent condition. As the market continues to favor buyers, we are encouraging our collectors to be more proactive, developing wish-lists for artists they would like to add to their collections. This strategic approach ensures you're not only prepared to wait for the perfect piece but also ready to move confidently when the right opportunity presents itself.

As the luxury market continues to expand, collaborations between artists and high-end brands have become a defining feature of contemporary culture. These partnerships date back nearly a century—designer Elsa Schiaparelli famously teamed up with artists Salvador Dalí and Jean Cocteau in the 1930s to create surrealist fashion pieces. In 1977, BMW launched its iconic Art Car series, Taittinger introduced artist-designed champagne bottles in 1983, and Swatch initiated a partnership with Keith Haring in 1986. Together, these projects helped establish a tradition of merging fine art with luxury design.

Today, limited-edition collaborations born from these partnerships are among the most coveted items for collectors and investors.
